Forget cat cafes. Or black cat cafes. Or penguin bars. Japan’s latest novelty cafe is the “fukurou cafe” (フクロウカフェ), or the “owl cafe.”
Owl cafes like Fukurou no Mise (“Owl Shop”) and Tori no Iru Cafe (“The Cafe with Birds”) started getting noticed online in Japan late last year.
This summer saw more owl cafes open, and currently there are owl cafes like Fukurou Sabou (“Owl Teahouse”) in Tokyo, Owl Family in Osaka, and Crew, another owl cafe in Osaka, among others.
omg must go live here o.o
IM GONNA CRY
SOMEONE GO WITH ME TO AN OWL CAFE
Anyone here have a commentary on this? I want to know if it’s good for the animals or not. ;_; I’ve seen this post going around a lot lately, and I can’t imagine that having all those predators hooded, so close to each other, is any good? Especially in the bottom photo, they’re tethered yeah but if one of them baited it could easily attack the others, they’re tethered super super close.
IT’S A CUTE PLACE BUT i’m afraid for the wellfare of burd. But I don’t want to go out and say it’s a bad place, when it might not be, idk.
No this is not good. At all.
For a start many of these owls are nocturnal, and forcing them to spend all day in a brightly lit room is likely very stressful and uncomfortable for them. Forcing them to have constant human contact is also probably very stressful.
Secondly keeping this many owls of different species so close together is a serious risk. The bigger owls could easily turn around and attack/kill one of the smaller owls. I’ve been to many bird of prey centers/displays and the staff are always super careful not to have two owls of different species out at the same time because of how risky it is. They also never have owls out for more than 10-15 minutes to minimize stress.
And thirdly the environment they’re in is in no way suitable. Owls should be kept outdoors in large, naturalistic aviarys where they have room to fly and places to hide away if they don’t want to be observed. This is no life for an owl. Even if they have proper aviarys to retire too once the cafe shuts this is still in no way ideal.
I expect there’s a load more issues not immediately obvious, too. Sure, it might be cute but the welfare of the birds has to come first and places that exploit exotic animals in this way should not be supported.
not to mention I think I see a Peregrine Falcon or something in the last pic… some owl and other birds of prey attack and kill each other so that isnt any good, either
